Why I Love Creating Employee-Generated Content (and Why It Works)

Examples of employee-generated content from behind the scenes, mini interviews and staff photos.

If you’ve worked with me, you probably already know how much I love filming content that features your team.

There’s just something so special about capturing those behind-the-scenes moments. The ones that show the real people who make your business what it is.

Whether it’s a casual reel of your front desk team recreating a trending video, a “day in the life” video from one of your key staff members, or your whole team getting involved in a fun challenge, I’m always looking for ways to bring that energy into your content.

Because here’s the thing: people connect with people.

And while I love a clean, aesthetic feed, what really gets people to stop scrolling and feel something is content that feels human. Real. Relatable. That’s where employee-generated content (or EGC) comes in.

So… what is employee-generated content, really?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Content that features your employees. But not in a staged or forced way. It’s showing them doing what they do best, being themselves at work, having fun, sharing their voice, and being part of the experience your brand offers.

Sometimes that looks like a quick 15-second video with a trending audio. Other times it’s more thoughtful, like a mini interview or staff tips.

The goal is to make people feel like they already know your team before they ever walk through your doors.

Why this kind of content matters

Because your team is your brand. They’re the energy behind the service. The reason clients come back. The ones your customers are actually talking to, laughing with, and trusting every day.

When you bring your team into the spotlight, it shows your audience that you’re more than a logo. You’re a business made up of real people who care. And in a world where everything can feel overly curated, that kind of authenticity stands out.

Plus, team content is usually the kind of content that performs really well. It’s shareable. It’s engaging. And most importantly, it makes people feel something.

How I approach EGC with my clients

When I’m filming content for a client, I always set aside time for employee content.

Sometimes we plan it out, like if there’s a trending idea I think the team would have fun with. But other times, it’s just about capturing what’s already happening like behind the scenes content. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.

And I know not everyone loves being on camera, so I keep it light and low-pressure. My job is to guide, direct, and make people feel comfortable while also keeping it fun. The best content usually comes from the moments where everyone forgets the camera’s even there.

One last thing

Your team probably has a lot more to say (and show) than you think. Giving them a chance to be part of your brand’s storytelling builds culture and trust inside and outside your business.

If you’ve been wanting to bring more of that human, people-first energy into your content but you’re not sure where to start, I’d love to help.

At Social Crush, I help Toronto-based businesses plan and create content that feels aligned, engaging, and real. And yes, that includes capturing the magic of your team in action.
